The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians is getting ready for the annual Nesika Illahee Pow-Wow next weekend (August 13-15). The event is free. Many different Tribal nations will be involved. The public is invited to attend this traditional event, at the Pauline Ricks Memorial Pow-Wow Grounds on Government Hill in Siletz. The celebration starts with the crowning of the 2010-2011 Siletz Royalty at 6:00 p.m. Friday Aug. 13. All dance styles will enter the arena at 7:00 p.m. during the first Grand Entry. Non-competitive dances in which the public can participate follow the Grand Entry.

“This is a great way for people to experience American Indian culture right here on the Oregon Coast,” said Mona Fisher, cultural education coordinator for the Siletz Tribe. “You can learn about the different styles of pow-wow dancing, see the beautiful regalia up close and even participate yourself in some of the inter-tribal dances.”

A variety of food and Native arts and crafts and jewelry will be offered for sale by more than 50 vendors on the grounds.

There is a parade through downtown Siletz at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 14. You can register for the parade on the tribe’s website, at the Tribal Administration building (201 SE Swan Avenue, Siletz), or by calling Mona Fisher at 541-444-1230. Last minute registration is available at the Administration building at 8:00 a.m. Saturday.

Back at the Pow-Wow grounds, a Grand Entry will occur at 1:00 p.m. with competition dancing during the afternoon for youth and teens. Competition dancing for adults and Golden Age entrants, and finals for youth and teens occur after the Grand Entry at 7:00 p.m. Saturday night.

Registration also is available the morning of the parade at 8 a.m. at the Siletz Tribal administration building. If you are not registered by 9 a.m., you cannot take part in the judging, which starts at 9 a.m. You can, however, still participate in the parade.

Sunday events being at noon, with a Grand Entry, followed by awards for competitive dance category winners.

A free shuttle will be available from various parking lots in Siletz to the pow-wow on Government Hill. Signs will be posted. Parking is extremely limited at the pow-wow grounds, so organizers encourage shuttle use. The event is alcohol- and drug-free. The pow-wow announcer will tell attendees when pictures can be taken.
