Toledo Family Recouping After Fire
(Updated to show Friday night fundraiser and new donation location)
Family and friends are rallying around David and Cheryl Glasscock and their family after a fire destroyed the home they were renting at 1608 NW Spruce early Tuesday morning. The family has been getting temporary assistance from Red Cross, but is now working to find a more permanent housing situation. Their sister-in-law, Teresa Glasscock, says they literally escaped with only the clothes on their backs. She is taking donations of clothing, personal items and cash at her workplace, Hoover’s Bar and Grill in South Beach (3539 SW Coast Highway). A relief fund has been set up at the Bank of America in Newport. There is also a fundraiser Friday night at Hoovers. Watch our website for new information on how you can help.
Toledo Fire Chief Will Ewing says 19 firefighters turned out on the scene about 2:30 a.m. to find all three stories of the home in flames. “It was a tough fire,” he said, “because we had to get the lower two stories first” before tacking the third floor. Ewing says after a pretty careful investigation he is still uncertain about the fire’s cause. He says the building’ s owners, Larry and Julie Zimmerman of Milwaukie, may have someone come in from their insurance company for a closer look.
