Animal Services, LCSO Team Up For Dog Rescue
An Animal Services Deputy and Sheriff’s Patrol Deputy teamed up January 23 to rescue a dog that had been washed away in Big Creek north of Newport. The call to Lincoln County Sheriff Office Animal Services Deputy Kerri Tyler came in about 10:00 a.m. Tuesday. Upon her arrival, Tyler learned the dog’s owner, Katherine Howard of Newport, had been walking her 12 year old Border Collie, “Addy,” when the dog was washed into the stream. Tyler searched the area and located the dog partially submerged, clinging to a log at the entrance of a culvert in the swift storm-swollen creek. The dog appeared to be cold and losing its grip on the log. Bruster decided to wade into the creek with a catch pole, and with Tyler’s assistance was able to bring Addy to shore, cold and wet but uninjured. Howard had been able to call 9-1-1 with a borrowed cell phone. “Dog owners need to be aware of high water in streams that are usually placid at other times of the year can be very dangerous now,” Tyler said. “People should not attempt to rescue their pets in cases like this where they could also become a victim,” Tyler added.
