Obituary: John Abbas of Newport

John Michael Abbas, 60, of Newport, died September 26 at Avamere’s Newport Rehabilitation facility.

He was born at the old Toledo Hospital on January 8, 1951 to Geraldine (Geri) and Henry Abbas, Jr. and graduated from Toledo High School in 1969. As a teenager, he delivered the Oregonian and worked as a box-boy and later as a clerk at the Toledo Thriftway. During his Naval service, he married Janet Garcia October 20, 1972. After the military, John returned to Toledo where he worked at the Cascadia Mill and then went to work in the bag plant at Georgia Pacific. In 1976 John was involved in an auto accident that left him completely disabled, and was cared for at the New Lincoln Hospital in Toledo, by his parents and then at Newport Rehab where he remained until his death. John was preceded in death by his father, and his grandparents. He is survived by his daughters, Michelle Abbas of Lake Stevens, WA and Cheryn (Kevin) Smith of Fayetteville, NC, his mother, Geri Abbas of Toledo, Oregon, his brothers Dennis (Cecilia) Abbas, Clifford Abbas, his sister Debby (Chet) Lee, and his granddaughters Morgan, Amber and Cynthia Smith.

The family will have a private graveside service at Eureka Cemetery, with a public Memorial Service at the Toledo Elks Lodge where John was a member for 40 years, at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 1. A reception will follow. Bateman Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Obituary: Roy “Tony” Little of Siletz

Roy “Tony” Little, age 50, of Siletz died September 20. Tony was born September 27, 1960 in Newport to Rothy Little Jr. and his wife Ann. A graveside memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday October 1, 2011 at the Toledo Cemetery in Toledo, Oregon. Arrangements by Bateman Funeral Home.

Obituary: Evelyn Joyce Schriver

Evelyn Joyce Schriver, 77, of Elk City, died from cancer on Sept. 15, at home with family by her side. She was born to Joseph Brown and Violet “Haskins” Brown on Sept. 11, 1934 in “Dixon Meadows” just outside of Toledo. She graduated from Toledo High School in 1952 and began a long career in banking at National Security Bank (which later became Bank of the West) in Toledo. She retired after 47 years, in 1999. In 1971, upon a brief marriage to Don Schriver, she became step-mother to 9 children. The family says “they remained a huge part of her life, that later led to her becoming “grandma” to 43 grandchildren, and 53 great-grandchildren on the Schriver side. Robert Bemrose was also considered a son by Evelyn. She enjoyed hunting and camping with her family. She loved to cook for everyone. She also enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting, puzzles, and watching professional baseball.”

She is survived by her brother, Donald Brown of Monroe, OR; nephews and nieces, Robert Reed (Jerilyne) of Burnt Woods, Pam Standstipher (Jim) of Hoquiam, WA, Don Reed (Rosemarie) of Blodgett, James Reed (Patricia) of Siletz, Frederick Brown (Linda) of Elk City, Violet (Babe) Brown (Thomas) of Philomath, Keith Brown (Cindy) of Florence, Joseph Brown Jr (Rikka) of Florence, Arthur (Tuffy) Brown (Robin) of Toledo, Carla Freeman, John Brown Jr. of Toledo, OR, Jodie Thompson (Hoss) of Toledo, Ronnie Brown of Cottage Grove, Cheri Evans (Robert) of Bakersfield, CA; and Desiree’ Brown, Robert Brown, Scott Chase, Debbie Chase, Glenn Fitzpatrick of Georgia; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Brown, Joyce Brown, Luann Brown and Patricia Spinney; 64 great nephews and 61 great nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Frederick Brown, Joseph Brown, Arthur Brown, Johnny Brown and sister, Mary-Ann Brown. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9th at the Toledo Elks Lodge, followed by a Potluck dinner. Arrangements by Affordable Burial & Cremation Co.

Obituary: Rufus M. Wood

Rufus, "Bud" Wood


Rufus “Bud” Milton Wood, 89, of Toledo died September 16, at his home in Toledo. He was born Nov. 5, 1921 in Blackfoot, Idaho to Rufus B. Wood and Maude Wood. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army, where he was awarded two bronze stars. He married Shirlie Beardslie in 1951, and worked at Wolf’s Grocery in Toledo, Snyders Market in Toledo, Hillcrest Grocery in Toledo. He retired from JC Market in Newport. He is survived by his wife, Shirlie Wood of Toledo; sons Chris (Patty) Wood of Idaho and Mike (Debra) Wood of Arizona, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and his sister Ruthe (Bob) Hercher. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Wally Wood. At his request, no services will be held. Arrangements by Affordable Burial & Cremation Co.

Obituary: Virginia Trost

Virginia Muriel Trost, 76 of Toledo died September 14 at her home. She was born June 2, 1935 in Coalinga California to Haskell E. Cape and Muriel (Whisler) Cape. She retired as an AT&T long distance operator and was a world traveler. She is survived by children Cheryl Smith Sandoval; Bruce and Jody Trost; Michele Trost and Patrick Harris; siblings: Haskell (Sonny) Cape and Darlene Houtchens; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Carol Allen, and a great-grandson, Dominic. A Celebration of Life will be held October 8 at the Newport Visual Art Center (Upstairs) 777 NW Beach Drive.
