Obituary: Lynn Whitlow

Lynn Whitlow

Lynn Ann Brooks Whitlow, 62, a resident of Lincoln County, died October 27, 2011 of liver cancer at her home. She was born February 19, 1949 in Portland to Arthur A. Brooks and Holly Flora (Nelson) Brooks. She was a graduate of Siletz High School and Western Oregon University. Lynn married Douglas Kent Whitlow on Jan. 24, 1976 in Hinesville, GA. Lynn moved to Hawaii and then American Samoa. She returned to the home of her parents in Siletz, Oregon and lived there for the remainder of her life. Her family said, “Lynn was a kind and generous person who touched many lives through her countless hours of volunteer work, guidance, advocacy, teaching and friendship. She was employed by the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians (CTSI) as a drug and alcohol counselor, family advocate and was a tireless community volunteer.

She was a member of the South Beach and Siletz Baptist Churches, the Siletz Grange, the Siletz Valley Friends of the Library, CEDAR, My Sister’s Place, the Siletz Parks & Rec Council, and the Siletz Valley Partnership among others. She is survived by her son Jeremy Todd (Tracy) Whitlow, stepdaughter Shannon Whitlow Stevens and five grandchildren, siblings Anita (William A.) Wheeler and Sherie (Willard) Yoder. She was preceded in death by: her parents, Arthur and Holly Brooks, her half-sister Jean Watson, and her husband, Douglas Whitlow. Memorial Services will be 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6th at the Siletz Tribal Community Center. Services will be followed by a “Thanksgiving style” potluck meal. A Memorial Fund has been set up in Lynn’s name at OSU Federal Credit Union for medical expenses; or you may make a contribution in Lynn’s name to any of the charities she supported.

Obituary: Patricia Grimstad of Newport

Long-time Newport resident, dance teacher, and supporter of the arts Patricia Grimstad died October 20. She was born January 4, 1926 to Carl and Helen King. She received a degree in Journalism from University of Oregon, where she met and married Erling Grimstad. The couple moved to Newport in 1950 and started a CPA practice. She founded Pat’s School of Dance in 1957. Her family said “Pat was involved in volunteer activities as director of the Miss Lincoln County Pageant for seven years, a long-time coordinator of the Newport Loyalty Day Court, and founding member of the Performing Arts Center board. She served as President of Arts Oregon, President of the Coastal Arts Guild as well as President of Porthole Players. In 2007, Pat was recognized as a Community Legend at the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts Annual Community Legends.”

She is survived by her four children: Signe (Steve), Neil (Bokhi), Richard (Lori), and Sonja (Mike); ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2007. A celebration will be held Saturday, Oct. 29 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club. Memorial donations may be made to the Central Coast Humane Society. Obituary: Jean Storm of Toledo

Jean Ardeth Storm, 80, died at her home in Toledo, October 20, 2011. She was born in Anacortes, WA May 22, 1931 to James and Grace (Calhoun) Olmstead. Her family said, “Jean worked in the banking industry for almost 40 years. She loved to play the piano and crochet and her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the loves of her life.” She was preceded in death by her father and mother, James and Grace Olmstead and brother, Ralph Olmstead. She is survived by her children Charlotte Ann Gwynn and Jeff Allen Storm; grandchildren Brandy, Shon and Shane Gwynn; great-grandchildren Kayla and Breanna Henderson, Korey and Shyera Gwynn; and nieces Patty Neitzel and Mary Jo Calhoun. Body Identified as Missing Neotsu Woman

Kayoko Umenishi

Kayoko Umenishi is missing and presumed endangered

The Lincoln County Medical Examiner has positively identified the body of a woman found Saturday morning on a local beach as Kayoko Umenshi, 38, of Neotsu. Umenshi reportedly left her home October 12, driving the family car, a white 2001 Toyota Camry with Oregon license plate 562EZM. She was listed as missing and considered endangered because she left without medication. Her car was found later at the Otter Crest overlook. Then, on the morning of October 15, 2011, Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers responded to a report of a woman’s body found on the beach near Beverly Beach State Park. There was no evidence at the scene that her death was associated with a crime. An investigation continues into the cause of her death.

Kayoko Umenishi was born August 17, 1973 in Hiroshima, Japan to Junso and Fukumi Nakagawa. She is survived by her husband and son. No services are planned at this time. Arrangements by Pacific View Memorial Chapel.

Obituary: Evelyn Greathouse of Toledo

Evelyn Rae Greathouse, 98 of Siletz died October 15 at her home. She was born December 21, 1912 in San Francisco, California to Raymond L. and Cena (Hamon) Hainline. She graduated from high school in 1931 in Armington, IL at a time when education for women was not a priority, and grew up on an Illinois farm, marrying Ford Greathouse right after high school. They moved to Newport in 1960 where her husband managed a Shell station. They later moved to Bend. After his death, she moved to Illinois for a time and then returned to Siletz. She is survived by her daughter, Bettie (Gene) Turner of Siletz; 12 Grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ford Greathouse in 1975; sons Raymond “Ray” and Robert “Bob” Greathouse; grandchildren Jeff Greathouse and Evelyn Greathouse; siblings Mabel, Hazel and Richard. Services will be held October 21 at 2:00 p.m. at the Siletz Church of Christ. A viewing will take place at noon and a reception will follow the service. There will also be services in Minier Illinois where interment will occur.
