Library Book Sale in Siletz Saturday

February 20, 2012 Siletz No Comments

In observance of “Love Your Library Month,” the Siletz Valley Friends of the Library host a book and bake sale at the library Saturday, February 25, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. The library is located at 255 South Gaither, next to the post office. Hard bound books, paperbacks, videos and DVDs will all be on sale. The sale coincides with the library’s 58th birthday, which features an open house. The Friends group is raising money to power wash and stain the exterior cedar siding of the five year-old building. The Lincoln County Library District pays for staff, books and computers, but the Friends group, who originally raised the money for the new library, still shoulders many costs associated with keeping the library clean, maintained and operating smoothly. The estimate for the siding work is $18,000 and can only be accomplished in the summer, so the group is trying to raise the funds in the next few months. Donations may also be mailed to SVFOL, P.O. Box 130, Siletz, OR 97380. For more information, call 541-444-2855.

Three Alarm Fire Displaces 20 Toledo Residents, Destroys “A” Street Apartment

February 5, 2012 Newport, Siletz, Toledo 6 Comments

Firefighters attack on the second story

(Originally published 3:53 a.m. 2/5/12. Most recent update 9:30 a.m. 2/5/12)

A fast-moving fire early Saturday morning displaced about 20 people, injuring one badly, as it destroyed an apartment building at 711 N “A” Street in Toledo. The most seriously injured victim was “airlifted by helicopter to Emanuel Hospital’s burn unit in Portland with third-degree burns over 15% of his body,” according to Toledo Fire Chief Will Ewing. He added he believes the burns are “survivable.” Ewing said “I want to really commended Toledo Police officers Mike Pace and Jeff Wagner for a quick response to clear the burning building,” which could have saved lives. Ewing said Pace was at Toledo Chevron around the corner working traffic when he heard yelling at the apartment. He ran over and Wagner was summoned from patrol and arrived shortly thereafter. The first alarm went out just before 1:00 a.m. and mutual aid arrived early from the Newport and Siletz Valley Departments to fight what turned out to be a very stubborn fire. Ewing said there were 27 firefighters on the scene for the three-alarm call.

Ewing said the most seriously injured victim was in the apartment where the fire broke out. The other man was injured when he had to jump from a second-story window, after throwing his dog to safety. He suffered lacerations. Red Cross arrived just after 2:00 a.m. and set up services at the Toledo Police Department, located right next door to the burning structure. The basement of the Toledo Library was also used for a rest and rehabilitation area for fire victims, and provided bathroom access.

Happy Birthday Siletz Valley Public Library

February 4, 2012 Siletz No Comments

This papier-mache birthday cake with candle “wishes” was constructed by Carol Schramm, Siletz Library Manager, as a way for the public to donate gifts to the library in honor of its 58th birthday. The “gifts” are supplies needed to help staff and volunteers better serve the public and maintain the library, which are not covered by the budget. Anyone may take a candle and return the item, wrapped or unwrapped to the library during the month of February.
