Letter on Football Safety

April 3, 2012 Local News, Toledo No Comments

Dear Editor,

Tonight (April 2) PBS aired a deeply disturbing report summarizing the results of a scientific study of the impacts to which small children are subjected playing full-contact football, and I want to encourage everyone involved in this sport to see it at this link. I realize that this will not sit well with many residents of Toledo, but I think this study, in addition to a growing body of research on the potential for debilitating brain injuries from big hits on the football field indicate that the time has come for schools and parents to seriously reconsider whether or not the thrill of playing this game is worth the risks.

North Bay Road Open Again

April 1, 2012 County, Toledo, Weather No Comments

A concrete barrier (bottom) will help control continued debris flows expected by Public Works (photo: Bridget Wolfe)

Debris clearance is finished on Yaquina Bay Road (North Bay Road) just outside of Toledo.  The road is still covered in mud and will probably remain slippery until rain washes the mud away. County crews and private contractors worked daylight hours since the slide occurred Friday. Lincoln County Public Works Director Jim Buisman said he expects the hillside will continue to flow, if not as dramatically as last week. A concrete barrier has been installed to catch additional debris.

Yaquina Bay Road May Open Sunday Night

March 30, 2012 Toledo No Comments

Lincoln County Public Works Director Jim Buisman said Saturday crews may be able to reopen Yaquina Bay Road near Toledo Sunday night, but described that as a “best case scenario.” Crews were busy today moving debris off both ends of the slide, which occurred Friday. Engineers created their own additional debris flow to stabilize the hillside as much as possible. They believe the hillside will continue to flow, but at a slow rate. Once the way is cleared, concrete barriers will be installed along the uphill side of the road to catch any additional dirt or debris coming off the hillside. Then the road will be re-opened.

Buisman estimated about 1:00 p.m. Saturday that crews had already moved about 2,000 cubic yards of material, which was put into dump trucks and carted off about 15 yards at a time. Debris was piled at a site uphill from Hidden Valley Road and another down by the Port of Toledo boatyard. Crews began work at daylight Saturday and will continue during daylight hours until the work is complete.

Local residents who need to access Hidden Valley Road or Criteser Loop, or North Bay Road up to MP 12 must due so from the Newport end of Yaquina Bay Road until further notice.

Toledo Food Pantry Adds Hours, Needs Volunteers

March 23, 2012 County, Siletz, Toledo No Comments

Siletz Pantry to re-open this year

The Toledo Food Pantry is now open twice a week and has both regular daytime and evening hours. Coordinator Joyce Thompson Graham said the new hours will make food pantry services available to a larger number of community clients living in the Toledo area. The Toledo operation currently serves about 250 people, roughly 100 households per month. The new hours are Tuesdays from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. and Thursdays from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. The previous ‘first Tuesday’ hours are no more. The Toledo Food Pantry is located on the lower level of the Trinity United Methodist Church (383 N.E. Beech Street),

“New volunteers would be helpful,” Graham said, “especially in the morning to help unload the delivery truck and stock shelves, and also to do publicity and coordinate food and fund drives. Prospective volunteers can callBetty Rufus at 541-270-2463. Food Share will also re-open the Siletz Pantry again sometime this summer, Graham said, “and would be happy to accept new volunteers for that.” Siletz area volunteers can call 541-265-8578 or email Graham.

For general information call the Toledo Food Pantry at 541-270-2463 or Food Share of Lincoln County at 541-265-8578.
