Toledo Newspapers: A Short History

There is a long, rich history of journalism and news publication in Toledo, reaching back to well before its establishment as a city in 1905.

The first edition of the Lincoln County Leader was published in Toledo on March 9, 1893, less than one week after the establishment of Lincoln County by the State of Oregon, when the ratification papers were signed in Toledo.

That first issue of The Leader offered an “Introductory” in which it was written that “In entering upon the work of publishing a weekly paper we will make no promises of future great performances, assuring the people only that as long as we are engaged in the work we will do our utmost for the advancement of the best interest of Lincoln County and Toledo, asking in return as liberal a patronage as the people feel that our efforts have entitled us to.”

The Lincoln County Leader passed through several owners, until it was purchased by Elmer and Margaret Price, who published the Leader for 16 years, with the final issue published November 3 1966. The Prices also published the Newport Graphic-Review from 1963 to 1966. The two papers were purchased in ’66 by the publishers of the Newport News-Times. The Leader continued to publish under its own masthead until it was dissolved into the News-Times in 1987.

Under Elmer and Margaret Price, the Leader became the first weekly in Oregon to install automated typesetting equipment, and in 1959 was the first weekly in the state to use a photo-offset press. The Leader Building on the corner of Main and Business 20 was built by the Prices in 1959, and is now the home of Breseño Gallery.

In his farewell editorial, Elmer Price wrote that “the greatest reward in the experience of weekly newspaper publishing has been the close association we have had with people of our communities.” As for the role of the newspaper, Price wrote “We have tried always, in the interest of all segments of the community, to be an independent voice with honesty and with fairness to all viewpoints.”

That’s a good goal. We hope to meet it.
