Food Share A Cause for Cobblestone

July 8, 2010 Focus, Hunger 2 Comments

Rick and Laura Myers of Cobblestone Pizza have a history of giving away part of their proceeds to good causes, and starting in June, they added Toledo Food Share to the list. Cobblestone has started donating proceeds from the second Tuesday of each month to support local anti-hunger efforts. According to volunteer Rita Rose, Toledo Food Share serves about 350 people each month from the Basement of Trinity United Methodist Church (383 NE Beech St.). Food Share hours are Tuesdays 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. and the third Tuesday of each month from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Rose says people need to prove their address to use Food Share, but don’t need to show income information. To donate, volunteer or get more information about Toledo Food Share, call 541-265-8578.

More Oregonians than ever count on public services to help feed their families. Demand for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits (SNAP, formerly food stamps) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) increased again last month, and the trend is expected to continue into next 2011.

The number of Oregonians receiving SNAP benefits in May was up 17 percent from a year ago and 46 percent since July 2008. The number of TANF recipients is up 5 percent from a year ago and 35 percent from July 2008; this program is available only for very low-income Oregon families. To be eligible for SNAP benefits, families must earn less than 185 percent of the federal poverty level, along with other factors. For a family of four, the income limit is less than $3,400 per month. There is no DHS office in Toledo. The Newport office is at 120 NE Avery St., 541-265-2248.
