More Oregonians than ever count on public services to help feed their families. Demand for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits (SNAP, formerly food stamps) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) increased again last month, and the trend is expected to continue into next 2011.
The number of Oregonians receiving SNAP benefits in May was up 17 percent from a year ago and 46 percent since July 2008. The number of TANF recipients is up 5 percent from a year ago and 35 percent from July 2008; this program is available only for very low-income Oregon families. To be eligible for SNAP benefits, families must earn less than 185 percent of the federal poverty level, along with other factors. For a family of four, the income limit is less than $3,400 per month. There is no DHS office in Toledo. The Newport office is at 120 NE Avery St., 541-265-2248.
